Baa Baa Black Sheep’s Special Order

By Lianne Ong and Janice Khoo

Baa Baa Black Sheep’s Special Order is a nursery rhyme from one of my favourite children’s books, Sing a Song of Hawker Food written by Lianne Ong and Janice Khoo, and illustrated by Chao.

We all know the classic nursery rhymes and stories from our childhood. But discovering new, lovable verse takes a lot of work. Times change. We should embrace new literature that embodies current values and histories for our kids.

In 2022, I volunteered at the Asian Festival of Children’s Content, ‘Lit Up‘ to connect with other children’s writers. I discovered the delightful book Sing a Song of Hawker Food, in which nursery rhymes and Singapore hawker culture collide! I was blown away by the authors’ live rendition of ‘Itsy Bitsy Spider’ climbing a Milo Dinosaur at the event. I purchased a copy of the book, thinking my son would grow to love it in a year or two (he was 18 months at the time), but it instantly became a huge hit at home! We read Sing a Song of Hawker Food every night after dinner.

If you enjoyed my video rendition of Baa Baa Black Sheep’s Special Order, please buy the book Sing a Song of Hawker Food. It’s a great way to educate kids on Singapore hawker culture.
