4 a.m. Raspberry Party

Not Sleepy!

Whoever coined the phrase ‘sleep like a baby’ had a wicked sense of humour. I have two children, and since day dot, going to sleep and staying asleep has been a real challenge.

I have tried so many things to encourage a peaceful night’s rest: bedtime stories, lullabies, warm milk, rocking and swaying, foot rubs with magnesium, hot baths, and following strict routines – you name it, I’ve tried it. Getting the kids used to be so taxing.

Then, one day, I had an epiphany. I decided to forget about the routines and so-called ‘rules’, and to approach sleep with a sense of humour. After all, when kids are tired, they will eventually crash. All the desperate attempts to force it were purely turning me into a crazy lady and creating a stressful circus for everyone involved.

This poem is a playful ode to those middle-of-the-night wake-ups when you find your little one sticking out their tongue and blowing raspberries. Let’s kick off the sheets and embrace the fun!
